What is Family Story Creation?
Family Story Creation is a collaborative storytelling activity where everyone in the family contributes to creating a unique Clumsy & Friends adventure. This activity fosters creativity, strengthens family bonds, and makes reading and storytelling an interactive experience that everyone can enjoy together.
Benefits of Family Storytelling
- Develops language skills: Children expand their vocabulary and practice language construction.
- Encourages creativity: There are no limits to where imagination can take the story!
- Builds confidence: Children feel proud when their ideas are incorporated into the family story.
- Creates shared memories: These stories become unique family treasures that everyone helped create.
- Strengthens listening skills: Family members must listen carefully to build on each other's contributions.
How to Get Started
-
Choose a starting point
Begin with a favorite Clumsy & Friends character or create a new friend for Clumsy. You might ask: "What if Clumsy went to the moon?" or "What if Minnie Tickledust lost her magic feather?"
-
Establish a turn-taking system
Decide how you'll take turns. Each person might add a sentence, paragraph, or continue for 1-2 minutes before passing to the next person.
-
Set the scene
The first storyteller sets the scene: Who is in the story? Where are they? What's happening?
-
Build the adventure
Each family member adds to the story when their turn comes. Encourage everyone to say "Yes, and..." to build on previous ideas rather than contradicting them.
-
Capture your story
Consider recording your story (audio or written) so you can revisit it later!
